What to check on a GIA or IGI diamond report

Verify the report number, origin, stone details and report format, and match the document to the individual diamond you are considering.

The useful starting point

Check the report number on the issuing laboratory’s official service, then compare the origin, weight, measurements and available grades with the supplied document. Ask how the report is matched to your selected stone. A report lookup alone does not verify the physical diamond in front of you.

Verify the number, then the stone

Use GIA Report Check or IGI’s official verification page. Ask to inspect the report and selected diamond together. If the stone has a laser inscription, ask to see it under magnification and compare it with the report; the relevant identity checks depend on the stone and document.

Read the grades as separate details

Carat is weight; measurements describe dimensions. For a round brilliant, 3EX describes Excellent cut, polish and symmetry. It does not replace colour, clarity, or viewing the stone. Diamonds of the same weight can have different dimensions and appearances.

Check the report format

GIA currently assesses colourless to near-colourless lab-grown diamonds as Premium or Standard. Do not translate that overall label into a specific D/E/F or VVS2 grade. For our lab-grown offers, the precise advertised specification is confirmed against the selected stone’s documentation and written quotation.

Put the agreed details in writing

Record the diamond origin, individual specification and report reference, plus the setting and final price. A diamond grading report describes the stone; it does not certify the jewellery house, workmanship, setting quality or sale price.
